What is Aerial Laser Scanning (ALS)?
Airborne laser scanning (ALS) is a high — precision technology for remote sensing of the surface, based on the use of laser radiation to measure the distance to objects. Sensors mounted on aircraft emit laser pulses that bounce off the earth’s surface, creating a detailed cloud of dots.
The main result of the ALS is the creation of three — dimensional terrain models with high detail, which makes it possible to analyze the relief, vegetation density, engineering structures and other objects. This method is characterized by accuracy and speed, making it possible to collect data in large areas in a short time.
Depending on the task, aerial laser scanning is used for mapping, infrastructure design, forestry and agriculture, as well as monitoring natural and man-made objects.
What products can be obtained as a result of aerial laser scanning?
The capabilities of unmanned vehicles and equipment make it possible to obtain a wide range of various airborne laser scanning products, including:
Digital Model of Relief (DMR) A map of the heights of the earth's surface, cleared of vegetation, buildings, and other objects.
Digital Terrain Model (DTM) A three-dimensional model that displays the terrain and all ground objects, including buildings, trees, and engineering structures.
The point cloud An array of coordinate data representing a three-dimensional description of terrain and terrain features with high accuracy.
Infrastructure map Detailed mapping of engineering objects, such as power lines, bridges, roads, and buildings, with precise reference to coordinates.
